Below, you will find a list of general academic terms. You will likely already know many of the terms on this list, but not all!
This list is largely based on the research of Dr. Averil Coxhead. Dr. Coxhead is the Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington. She refers to her list of vocabulary words as the "New Academic Word List," or NAWL, which is a term you might hear if you do any further research into academic vocabulary. Dr. Coxhead's research includes "specialised and academic vocabulary in the trades [and] at university" (Victoria University of Wellington, n.d.). The Library has added a few additional terms, marked with a *.
