Information about Open Educational Resources which can be used by Franklin University faculty, staff and students.

Publishing Open Access (OA)

Different publications have different open access policies. Some open access publications publish articles without any cost, while others require the author to pay an article processing charge (APC).

Franklin University is a member of the OhioLINK consortium. OhioLINK has negotiated deals with Wiley, Cambridge University Press, and IOP (Institute of Physics) to let members of OhioLINK institutions make their articles available as open access content in journals published by those companies without requiring an APC.

Cambridge University Press Journals OA Publishing

OhioLINK's deal permitting those affiliated with OhioLINK institutions to publish open access articles in Cambridge University Press journals without charge is in place until the end of 2024. This deal applies when the corresponding author is affiliated with an OhioLINK institution.

As part of this deal, authors will be given an option to publish as Open Access when the article is approved for publication. There is no overall limit to how many OhioLINK authors can publish without the APC applying.

Elsevier OA Publishing

OhioLINK's deal permitting those affiliated with OhioLINK institutions to publish open access articles in most of Elsevier's hybrid journals published starts on January 1, 2024 and runs through the end of 2027. This deal applies when the corresponding author is affiliated with an OhioLINK institution.  

There is a maximum number of articles that may be published open access annually across all OhioLINK institutions. Once the limit is reached, the option to publish articles open access at no cost under the agreement will no longer be available. You can search for eligible journals using Elsevier's journal finder tool for the OhioLINK agreement(link sends e-mail)

IOP Journals OA Publishing

OhioLINK's deal permitting those affiliated with OhioLINK institutions to publish open access articles in most IOP journals without charge applies to articles accepted for publication by IOP after January 1, 2023 and runs through the end of 2025. This deal applies when the corresponding author is affiliated with an OhioLINK institution.

IOP will identify eligible authors after the first round of peer review, and contact authors of eligible articles with information about eligibility and a licensing agreement for the author to sign to make the article available through Open Access. The author does not need to take action to opt in to this agreement to publish their article as an open access article.

There is no limit on the number of articles published under this deal.However, certain IOP journals do not provide open access publication, and are excluded from this deal.

Springer Journals OA Publishing

OhioLINK's deal permitting those affiliated with OhioLINK institutions to publish open access articles in eligible hybrid journals published by Springer Nature (including many Springer, Palgrave, Adis, and academic journals at nature.com) after January 1, 2024 and runs through the end of 2026. This deal applies when the corresponding author is affiliated with an OhioLINK institution. Nature portfolio journals such as Nature itself and Scientific American are not included.  Fully open access journals are not included. 

Corresponding authors affiliated with an eligible institution who are publishing an eligible article type in an eligible journal are offered the option to publish their article as open access under the agreement. There is an annual limit to the number of articles published as open access under this agreement across all of OhioLINK member institutions.

Wiley Journals OA Publishing

OhioLINK's deal permitting those affiliated with OhioLINK institutions to publish open access articles in Wiley journals without charge is in place until the end of 2026. This deal applies when the corresponding author is affiliated with an OhioLINK institution.

As part of this deal, authors will be given an option to publish as Open Access when the article is approved for publication. There is an overall limit to how many OhioLINK authors can publish without the APC applying. If this limit is reached, the option to publish as OA under the OhioLINK deal will not appear.
