Understanding Plagiarism

Turnitin Support Wizard

Turnitin has an online support wizard, which can help you solve your problem:

  1. Go to the Turnitin Support Wizard;
  2. Under "how do you use turnitin", select "student;
  3. Under "I need help with", select your issue;
  4. Under "Just a little more information", select the answer that best fits your problem;
  5. Click on the "Find answer" button.

If the answer provided doesn't solve your problem, you can click on the "Raise a Ticket" button and submit a support ticket.

System Requirements

For optimal performance, Turnitin recommends using the following:

  • Desktop Operating Systems
  • Windows® 7, 8.1, 10
  • Mac OS X Intel v10.7+, El Capitan 10.11
  • ChromeOS
  • Desktop Browsers
  • Firefox 38+
  • Chrome 45+
  • Safari 9.1+
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Technical Requirements
  • 3GB of RAM or more
  • 1024x768 display or higher
  • Broadband internet connection
  • Internet browser set to allow all cookies from Turnitin.com/TurnitinUK.com
  • Javascript enabled
     

Although Turnitin should be compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome, experience has shown that it works best with Internet Explorer.

Accepted File Types

Turnitin will currently accept the following file types to generate Similarity Reports:

  • Microsoft Word® (.doc / .docx)
  • OpenOffice Text (.odt)
  • Google Docs via Google Drive™ (.gdoc files are NOT acceptable)
  • WordPerfect®  (.wpd)
  • PostScript (.ps/.eps)
  • Rich text format (.rtf)
  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp)

TurnItIn will also accept the following files, as noted:

  • Adobe PDF files, but will not accept PDF image files, forms, or portfolios, files that do not contain highlightable text (such as scanned inmages), documents containing multiple files or ones created by software other than Adobe Acrobat.
  • PowerPoint files (.pptx, .ppt, .ppsx, and .pps) may be accepted and TurnItIn will convert them to static PDF files.
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls and .xlsx) files will look as if they had been saved as a pdf.
